Es cierto. A lo largo de mi vida como docente, desde hace ya muchos años, he aprendido de los estudiantes muchas cosas, y de ellos he recibido gratos obsequios, especialmente su energía, su buena energía, y no solo por su corta edad, puesto que en diversas ocasiones yo era más joven que ellos, pero su fuerza de grupo siempre me enriquecía.

Pelear contra tanta ignorancia, social y académica, es muy difícil, y, como digo, los estudiantes me han enseñado que una sola golondrina no hace verano.

Hoy muchos de mis antiguos estudiantes son, con mucho orgullo de mi parte, mis maestros, y algunos de ellos, felizmente, mis amigos. Pero el motivo de este texto se refiere a otra clase de enseñanzas, esas que antes me ponían a hervir la sangre, pero hoy me causan otro tipo de sensaciones y sentimientos: sonrojo, extrañeza, sorpresa (ya casi no), risa… y también indignación, claro.

Por ellos me he enterado de que en el colegio no se aprende historia, y que no tiene importancia saber que Bolívar y Santander no son solo departamentos, de los que casi nada saben, porque tampoco vieron geografía; ni aprendieron matemáticas básicas, salvo a manejar una calculadora, hasta para sumar y restar; ni aprendieron español, porque para qué si ellos quieren estudiar inglés y viajar a Estados Unidos, tal vez, o a cualquier parte en donde puedan vivir su sueño, que solo en muy pocos se cumplirá.

Uno de ellos, por ejemplo, me enseñó que no es necesario tomar apuntes en clase, porque el día del examen todo se resuelve pegando la pregunta en Google, y de inmediato aparece la respuesta. Ni es necesario leer, porque todo está en internet, desde ese análisis del Quijote que les pidió algún profesor que tampoco leyó jamás a Cervantes, hasta el ensayo que sea, digamos, sobre “la chumacera del contimplín de la congargalla del mofle”, que también le pidió algún otro profesor, que jamás en su vida ha escrito un ensayo que pueda ponerles de ejemplo.

Todo, todo está en internet. Por ejemplo, la semana pasada, en una prueba, les pedí leer un texto, muy corto, y escribir una síntesis y un pequeño análisis. Google resolvió todo, pues allí se tiene el programa que resume un texto; y el análisis de lo que sea se encuentra en páginas como “elrincondelvago”, en cuyo nombre se estampa su razón de ser. Y el estudiante sabe que descarga lo que sea, lo imprime y lo entrega, y su profesor le pone 5,0 (bueno; no siempre; a veces le pone 4,8, porque no le puso carpeta de dos mil pesos, o porque alguna hoja tenía doblada una punta). El profesor tampoco se toma la molestia de leer el texto. Ni el estudiante sabe qué entregó, ni el profesor sabe qué le entregaron. Es un acuerdo tácito: el profesor le pone buenas notas por trabajos que todos saben que el estudiante no hizo, y este le pone buenas notas en la evaluación docente. Y todos felices.

Y cuando el profesor pone a los estudiantes a escribir un ensayo, aunque lo normal —como ya dije— es que este profesor no solo jamás ha escrito uno, sino que no tiene idea de cómo se escribe un ensayo, los estudiantes saltan a internet y copian. Y frente a la posibilidad de ser descubiertos por programas detectores de plagio, existe el programa que copia el texto y cambia palabras de forma automática para que los detectores de plagio no los descubran.

Encima de todo, hay gente, equipos completos, que ofrecen el servicio de elaboración de ensayos y tesis, y así hay profesionales que se gradúan sin haber hecho un solo trabajo por sí mismos.

No solo ser joven hoy es no saber de lo que ya comenté, sino ignorar sus raíces; no tener idea de los elementos culturales de su entorno; desde no saber qué cosas son un tiple y un bambuco hasta dar por hecho que nuestro presidente es el mismo presidente de Estados Unidos.

Pelear contra tanta ignorancia, social y académica, es muy difícil, y, como digo, los estudiantes me han enseñado que una sola golondrina no hace verano (aunque sé —por suerte— que no soy el único consciente del pésimo sistema educativo, y tal vez y ojalá cada día somos más), y me enseñaron que en vez de una gastritis es mejor causarse una sonrisa. Por mis estudiantes he aprendido a cambiar esa indignación, y la sorpresa, y la extrañeza, por la risa; definitivamente, la única y la más sana alternativa.
