Creo que nunca me he referido a ‘Pacho’ Santos como ‘Facho Santos’ o como ‘Fachito Santos’. No lo he hecho porque es un juego de palabras que no tiene fuerza, y porque en últimas no es cierto que se trata de alguien con mentalidad fascista. No creo incluso que tenga ideas de derecha, ni de izquierda. Él no tiene ideología alguna, lo único que trata es de encajar en alguna parte, así sea como Vicepresidente Interino de la Asociación Mundial de Terraplanistas.

En eso se la ha pasado toda la vida este sujeto. Tuvo la suerte de ser hijo del periodista más influyente de Colombia, el propietario del conglomerado de medios más poderoso del país. Sin embargo, pese a que en El Tiempo le adjudicaron una columna a dedo, el paso de ‘Pachito’ por el periodismo escrito fue de lo más gris, a tal punto que sólo adquirió nombre -nunca renombre- gracias a que el narcotraficante más famoso del planeta lo secuestró como parte de una estrategia para chantajear a su influyente padre. Lo anterior le concedió además una condición hipermediática de víctima, lo cual tuvo un segundo efecto de catapulta cuando nadie menos que Gabriel García Márquez escribió un libro al respecto, del cual él, ‘Pachito’, pese a que su cautiverio fue tan insípido como sus artículos de prensa, se convirtió, sin saber leer ni escribir (sobre todo esto último), en uno de sus protagonistas.

Sin embargo, nada de esto alcanzó para que alguien tomara en serio al columnista mediocre ni al mártir descafeinado y deslactosado. Fue entonces cuando ‘Pachito’ decidió tomar el toro de su vida por los cachos y, aprovechando el impulso que le dieron García Márquez y Escobar, se hizo activista por los Derechos Humanos, encabezando a gritos destemplados y manotazos unas inocuas marchas contra el secuestro que condujeron a que Álvaro Uribe se fijara en su imagen de torpe bonachón y lo escogiera como su fórmula vicepresidencial, para equilibrar así la suya de patrocinador de sanguinarios grupos paramilitares.

Durante su vicepresidencia -intrascendente incluso para los parámetros de un cargo de por sí intrascendente-, y aparte de delirantes anuncios de mundiales de fútbol próximos a jugarse en Colombia, su única gestión sobresaliente fue la vez que abrió la bocota para emitir unas declaraciones con las que la defensa de Yair Klein evitó que su cliente fuera extraditado a Colombia. Las cuales cabría suponer que fueron calculadas para proteger a su jefe, pero no: recordemos que estamos hablando de ‘Pachito’ Santos. Ubiquémonos. (Antonio Caballero, de su mismo círculo social y más o menos contemporáneo suyo, se refirió a él así en una columna: “Un cachorrito ladrador, de esos que corren como locos por toda la sala derribando floreros y enredándose en el cable de las lámparas. Simpático, sin duda, juguetón, lleno de vida, hasta el punto quizás de volverse un poco fatigante. Pero… cómo decirlo: poco serio. Hasta para Colombia”).

No obstante, hasta ahí sólo habíamos conocido a un personaje imprudente e inepto que proyectaba una caótica imagen, dando bandazos sin orden ni concierto entre los dos extremos del espectro político. Pero gracias un nuevo juguete al que su origen elitista le dio acceso -la dirección del noticiero RCN Radio- y a un afortunado caso de serendipia, ‘Pachito’ finalmente pudo lograr su sueño de diferenciarse, de por fin ser algo, lo que fuera.

La historia es esta: justo antes de que lo echaran a patadas de RCN por llevar el rating de la emisora a sus mínimos históricos y poner a ésta al borde de la bancarrota, ‘Pachito’ grabó un videoblog en el que, ayudado por su habitual imprudencia, quedó como un militante de la extrema derecha, lo cual hasta el momento únicamente era por la asociación que de él se hacía con Álvaro Uribe.

‘Pachito’ opinó en su nota audiovisual que a los muchachos que protestaban en la vía pública había que electrocutarlos, y una vez abatidos arrumarlos en alguna parte. De repente las críticas empezaron a lloverle, y él, sin importarle un bledo su pasado como defensor de Derechos Humanos, descubrió con alegría que ahora podría posar de fascista recién salido del clóset: ya no sería ‘Pachito’, la inofensiva mascotica familiar a la que nadie tomaba en serio. Ahora todos tendríamos que vérnosla con el temible ‘Fachito’ (una vez lo oí decirle a un entrevistador, loco de orgullo y vanidad, que en algunos conciliábulos se referían a él como «miembro de la Derecha ilustrada»).

Fungiendo ahora como malandro del libro Totalitarismo para Dummies, pero descartado por su jefe en sus fantasiosas aspiraciones presidenciales, nuestro Mussolini de peluche le exigió a su partido el apoyo para una candidatura a la Alcaldía de Bogotá. El cual consiguió, sí, pese a que todos, incluso él, conocíamos de antemano el fracasado final de su nueva pilatuna.

Pero eso no lo detuvo, y tal vez fruto de una de sus pataletas infantiles fue nombrado Embajador en Washington por Iván Duque, otro integrante de la colección uribista de peluches totalitarios, lugar desde donde viajaba constantemente a la frontera colombo-venezolana para hablar en media lengua con bebés maracuchos e imponerle repetidos ultimátums al Satán comunista Nicolás Maduro, y donde a gritos habla pestes de sus copartidarios, sin reparar en que vive en una ciudad en la que han instalado micrófonos hasta en las tortillas de Taco-Bell, su restaurante favorito, por cierto.

Ese es ‘Pacho’ Santos, un cero a la izquierda que alguien ha puesto de todos modos ahí, al que todos -conscientes de su inutilidad, de su nulo valor, hasta de su inconveniencia estética, del ocioso gasto de energía en que se incurre al imponerlo- vemos con fastidio y empalago.

Y cuyas vicisitudes y estupideces me importarían tres ciruelas, si no fuera porque una porción así sea ínfima de mi dinero contribuye, en forma de impuestos pagados, a que ese tontarrrón de capirote siga jugando a dárselas de muy machito.
