15 Mujeres mártires de la causa independentista

La mujer colombiana ha sido un estandarte de valores y coraje desde el periodo independentista, luchando a la par con los hombres que fueron testigos del sacrificio de una mujer llevada al fusilamiento en cada lugar donde hubo una lucha. Sin embargo, debido al riguroso sistema de patriarcado imperante en aquella época, no figuran en el Acta de Independencia redactada para la ocasión, por el solo hecho de ser mujer, según datan los historiadores. El Unicornio conmemora a aquellas mujeres mártires protagonistas de la causa independentista como ‘verdaderas heroínas’.

1. Manuela Beltrán Archila Sarmiento, la primera heroína


Nació el 13 de marzo de 1724 en El Socorro, Santander en el siglo XVIII, es considerada la primera heroína de la lucha de la independencia y promotora de una revolución sin precedentes que desencadenó «la Insurrección de los Comuneros». Se dice que falleció fusilada sin embargo no se tiene certeza de ello.

Se estableció el sistema de Impuesto colonial, de la Real Cédula del gobierno español, en la cual se determinó el aumento de los impuestos que motivaron la insurrección de los Comuneros, pues con este escrito se solicitaba su contribución económica para el sostenimiento de la guerra de España contra Inglaterra.

En dicho periodo regían los maltratos y la mala vida, la copa se rebosó una vez que conocieron el edicto que se ordenó el alza de los impuestos al consumo del tabaco y del aguardiente,  ante la necesidad de dinero del gobierno español para sufragar los gastos bélicos contra Inglaterra.

«La Real Cédula fue el soporte a través del cual los españoles se valieron para elaborar el edicto del Ayuntamiento de El Socorro por el cual se fijaba el impuesto de Armada y Barlovento que fue destrozado por una vendedora llamada Manuela Beltrán, quien pasó a la historia de la Nueva Granada el 16 de marzo de 1781, con 57 años, «mujer de pueblo» pero letrada. Siendo la primera en gritar su oposición a la corona. Este fue el descontento social y económico más grande contra el gobierno colonial iniciando una movilización reconocida como la «Insurrección de los comuneros» o gente del común de 1781.

Esta heroína también fue llamada como,«Heraldo Femenino de la Libertad».

La zona donde se empezaron a manifestar con mayor virulencia las protestas populares fue El Socorro, una de las más prósperas del virreinato, pero a la vez una de las que habían sido afectadas por la prohibición de la siembra de tabaco y por los problemas derivados de la tenencia de la tierra, afectando los consumos.

El pueblo de El Socorro, que gritaba «¡Viva el rey y abajo el mal gobierno!», eligió como Comandante General a Juan Francisco de Berbeo, que junto a Salvador Plata, Antonio Monsalve y Francisco Rosillo constituyeron una Junta Revolucionaria llamada del Común, de donde se derivó el apelativo de rebelión o insurrección comunera. Los líderes de la Revolución Comunera, José Antonio Galán Zorro, Lorenzo Alcantuz e Isidro Molina, que organizaron la marcha de veinte mil campesinos de alpargata, por caminos cenagosos y trochas peligrosas, llegarían con los insurrectos hasta Zipaquirá, para aceptar las Capitulaciones, habiendo sido traicionados por el Arzobispo Virrey Antonio Caballero y Góngora.

Se dice que fue fusilada, más no hay datos de registro.

2. Simona Duque de Alzate

El artículo 29 del decreto 1512 del 11 de agosto de 2000, dispone en su artículo 2 la creación y activación del Batallón de Apoyo de Servicios para el Combate No. 27 Simona de la Luz Duque de Álzate.

Nacida el 30 de marzo de 1773 en Marinilla Antioquia, se convirtió en un gran símbolo de la guerra de la independencia de Colombia. Portó el uniforme de un suboficial patriota y, como sargento, comandó uno de los grupos en la batalla en el Pantano de Vargas, hasta que fue herida de muerte en el pecho. Así Bolívar descubrió que se trataba de una mujer al curarla; así mismo entregó a cinco de sus seis hijos al entonces el Teniente Córdova, conmovido por este acto amor a la causa, los acepta en las tropas rebeldes.

Córdova, tratando de destacar la generosa acción de doña Simona, escribe una carta al general Francisco de Paula Santander en la que anota: «Un rasgo tan sublime de amor a la patria merece la más grande consideración de parte del gobierno». El General Santander decretó que la mujer recibiera un ingreso íntegro por el resto de su vida gracias a un rasgo tan sublime de amor a la patria. No obstante y pese a su avanzada edad, doña Simona se negó a recibir pensión mientras pudiera trabajar. Sin embargo, finalmente aceptó.

3. María Antonia Santos Plata


Nació el 10 de abril de 1782 en Pinchote, El Socorro Santander, considerada una de las mujeres más representativas de la independencia. Fue fusilada en el Socorro el día 28 de julio de 1819, en virtud de sentencia de un Consejo de Guerra aprobada por el Virrey don Juan Sámano, por declararse enemiga del rey.

En el período conocido como «La Patria Boba» (1810 y 1816) el rey de España envió a Pablo Morillo para “pacificar” o acabar con los revolucionarios, iniciando la reconquista española a través del el Régimen del Terror. Este proceso comenzó con el asedio español en 1815 donde se enviaron tropas para los bloquar a todas las provincias asesinando cruelmente a todos los que hubieren participado en la causa patriota.

Así las cosas , una mujer llamada Antonia Santos Plata preparó y sostuvo la guerrilla de Coromoro o de Santos que fue la primera que se organizó en la Provincia del Socorro para luchar contra los invasores españoles combatiendo el Régimen del Terror y apoyar al ejército patriota en la Campaña Libertadora de 1819, destacándose por ser la más organizada y la que peleó más bravamente durante los tres años de la Reconquista, teniendo como centro de actividades la hacienda El Hatillo de la familia Santos Plata.

Fueron jefes de esta guerrilla su hermano Fernando Santos Plata, José Gabriel Tobar, Camilo Gaona, José Manuel Ruiz y otros. Inicialmente la guerrilla tuvo cuarenta miembros, y posteriormente aumentó con las gentes que se fueron integrando a medida que el terror de la Reconquista penetraba en todos los pueblos.

El 12 de julio de 1819, el destacamento militar español, comandado por el capitán Pedro Agustín Vargas, llegó sorpresivamente a la hacienda de El Hatillo, y en la casa principal de la familia aprehendió a Antonia Santos, a su hermano menor Santiago y a su sobrina Helena Santos Rosillo, junto con dos esclavos, siendo conducidos inmediatamente a Charalá, pasándolos por Cincelada hoy Corregimiento en el cual aún existe el calabozo donde estuvo presa y, por último, fueron llevados a la población de Socorro, en donde fueron encerrados en los calabozos de la cárcel junto a otros numerosos detenidos por razones políticas.

El 28 de julio de 1819, a las diez y media de la mañana, Antonia Santos fue llevada al cadalso, ubicado en un ángulo de la plaza del Socorro, junto con sus compañeros Pascual Becerra e Isidro Bravo; iban acompañados por el cura de la parroquia, presbítero N. Torres. A la heroína la acompañó su hermano Santiago Santos, a quien le entregó sus alhajas de oro y su testamento; al oficial que mandaba la escolta le obsequió el anillo que llevaba puesto. Un sargento la ató al patíbulo y le vendó los ojos, se dio el redoblante y la escolta hizo fuego, consumándose así su muerte.

José María Eduardo Santos Plata es tatarabuelo del expresidente Juan Manuel Santos, María Antonia Santos viene a ser una tía abuela lejana, en cuyo honor Juan Manuel Santos decidió bautizar a su única hija como María Antonia. Santos es primo en primer grado (primos hermanos) por parte paterna y materna del exvicepresidente Francisco Santos Calderón.

Estas son las raíces santandereanas del expresidente Juan Manuel Santos, razón por la cual, miembros de varias bancadas políticas le llamaban ‘guerrillero’, debido a sus orígenes y sangre patriota; no obstante
galardonado con el Premio Nobel de Paz, justamente, por haber dado fin al conflicto armado con las FARC recientemente.

Antonia Santos es la representación del carácter y la fortaleza de las santandereanas que participaron en la Independencia. Reconocimiento hecho por Bolívar a las mujeres de la provincia de El Socorro en unas palabras que pronunció en voz alta y firme: «Madres, esposas, hermanas, ¿quién podrá seguir vuestras huellas en la carrera del heroísmo? ¿Habrá hombres dignos de vosotras? No, no, pero vosotras sois dignas de la admiración del universo y de la adoración de los libertadores de Colombia». 

4. Policarpa Salavarrieta Ríos, ‘LA POLA’, una eterna heroína


Nació en San Miguel de Guaduas, Cundinamarca. 26 de enero de 1797, fusilada en Santa fe junto a sus compañeros por traición a la corona española. !

Policarpa Salavarrieta fue la heroína más popular de la Nueva Granada durante la ‘Época del terror’, nombre que se le dio al periodo de la reconquista española a principios del siglo XIX. Ella no fue la única mujer víctima del general de Fuentesecas, Pablo Morillo; se calcula que durante esos años hubo al menos 150 mártires femeninas más.

Espió para las fuerzas independentistas criollas durante la Reconquista española En Santa fe hoy Bogotá, realizó actividades subversivas y tareas peligrosas, como coser para las señoras de los realistas con el fin de escuchar noticias, averiguar el número, los movimientos, el armamento y las órdenes de las tropas enemigas. También convencía a los jóvenes para unirse a los grupos de patriotas, y compraba material de guerra. Casi siempre hacía estos trabajos al lado de compatriotas, como Alejo Sabaraín, de quien se dice era su novio.

Policarpa fue detenida en la casa de Andrea Ricaurte de Lozano, y encerrada en el Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario convertido en cárcel.

El Consejo de Guerra la condenó a muerte, el 10 de noviembre de 1817, junto con Sabaraín y otros patriotas. La hora y fecha determinada para el fusilamiento fueron las nueve de la mañana del 14 de noviembre de 1817. La Pola marchó con dos sacerdotes a los lados. Se resistió un momento a marchar, para poder expresar sus pensamientos a los ministros que la acompañaban. Prosiguió con paso firme hasta el paredón de fusilamiento, y en vez de repetir lo que decían los religiosos, no hacía sino maldecir a los españoles. Al subirla al banquillo, se le ordenó ponerse de espaldas porque así deberían morir los traidores; ella solicitó permiso para ponerse de rodillas, por considerar que ésta era una posición más digna de una mujer y así murió mostrando gran parte de su espalda.

Su cuerpo no fue expuesto en las calles de Santa fe, como los de sus compañeros fusilados con ella, por ser un cuerpo femenino. Sus hermanos sacerdotes lo reclamaron y lo velaron en la iglesia de San Agustín. Actualmente sus restos se encuentran en el panteón de los héroes de la independencia en la Iglesia de la Veracruz en Bogotá.

Su muerte inspiró a poetas, escritores y dramaturgos para inmortalizar su historia, siempre resaltando su valentía y coraje.

Policarpa la gran heroína revolucionaria pronunció una frase antes de morir, que trascendió para siempre en la historia de Colombia.

Viles soldados, volved las armas a los enemigos de vuestra patria. ¡Pueblo indolente! ¡Cuán distinta sería hoy vuestra suerte si conociérais el precio de la libertad! Pero no es tarde: ved que ―aunque mujer y joven― me sobra valor para sufrir la muerte y mil muertes más. No olvidéis este ejemplo […] Miserable pueblo, yo os compadezco. ¡Algún día tendréis más dignidad! […] Muero por defender los derechos de mi patria.

El 9 de noviembre de 1967, en virtud de la Ley 44 del Congreso de la República de Colombia y firmada por el presidente Carlos Lleras Restrepo, declaró en su segundo artículo el día 14 de noviembre «Día de la mujer colombiana» en honor del aniversario de la muerte de «Nuestra heroína, Policarpa Salavarrieta».

5. Manuela Sáenz de Vergara y Aizpuru


Nació en 1795 en Quito, muere el 23 de noviembre de 1856 por una epidemia de difteria. Su cuerpo fue incinerado dentro de su casa y sus cenizas fueron depositadas en una fosa común.

Algunos historiadores han subestimado su honra, que además de mal señalarla como «la amante del libertador», omiten su importante desempeño como uno de los cerebros del periodo independentista. Su espíritu rebelde se manifestó desde muy temprano y, pese a las dificultades de la época, logró participar en acciones independentistas hasta llegar a ser una heroína, guerrera y estratega de la libertad latinoamericana.

En diciembre de 1816, con apenas 19 años de edad, Manuela conoció en la ciudad de Quito a James Thorne, acaudalado médico inglés veintiséis años mayor que ella; Simón Sáenz, su padre, como era costumbre en la época y por razones de conveniencia, pactó su boda para julio de 1817.

El 12 de septiembre de 1830 el emperador Antonio José de Quito le concedió el divorcio de James Thorne (algo muy inusual en la época), librándose de todo compromiso con el inglés que no había vuelto a ver desde su partida de Lima nueve años atrás, aunque tuvo que vender la Hacienda Cataguango para reconocerle la mitad de sus bienes como mandaba la ley.

Manuelita Sáenz, con 24 años de edad se enamoraría de Bolívar el mismo día, en el baile del municipio. Manuelita sería el gran amor de Bolívar hasta 1830. Sin embargo debe ser recordada como una «combatiente que rompió con las estrictas normas vigentes en ese entonces, vistió uniforme militar, aprendió a usar armas, desarrolló tácticas de espionaje para ayudar a los planes independentistas».

Desterrada de Colombia tras la muerte de Simón Bolívar se instala en puerto de Paita (Perú) lugar donde murió el 23 de noviembre de 1856 por una epidemia de difteria. Su cuerpo fue incinerado dentro de su casa y sus cenizas fueron depositadas en una fosa común y todas sus posesiones, para evitar el contagio, fueron incineradas, incluidas una parte importante de las cartas de amor de Bolívar y documentos de la Gran Colombia que aún mantenía bajo su custodia. 

Era Manuela Sáenz valerosa y sabía manejar la espada y la pistola, montaba muy bien a caballo vestida de hombre, con pantalón rojo, ruana negra de terciopelo y suelta la cabellera, En Santa fe la llamaban «La libertadora».

Manuela entregó al historiador O’Leary gran parte de documentos para elaborar la voluminosa biografía sobre el Libertador, de quien Manuela dijo: «Vivo adoré a Bolívar, muerto lo venero».

6. Antonia Ricaurte Nariño de Osorio

Nacida en junio 1800 en Santa Fe. Condenada al destierro y confinamiento en el pueblo de Zipacón, se le hizo marchar a pie. Fallecida en 1853, a la edad de 53 años

Hija de don Bernardino Ricaurte y doña Dolores Nariño, era sobrina del Precursor y hermana del Comandante José María Ricaurte, muerto prematuramente en la campaña de la Costa en 1820. En 1816, en los días en que Morillo hacía correr la sangre de los próceres en las plazas y calles de Bogotá, doña Dolores fue condenada al destierro y confinamiento en el pueblo de Zipacón, a donde sus hijas Antonia y Trinidad y sus sobrinas Mercedes e Isabel Nariño, se las hizo marchar a pie, escoltadas y sin más recursos que la caridad de las almas cristianas. Poco tiempo después de la batalla de Boyacá fue doña Antonia la esposa del ilustre servidor de la Independencia doctor Alejandro Osorio.

7. María de los Remedios Aguilar, La Zebollina

Nació en Andalucía, España. en julio de 1816, se decretó su destierro y confinamiento en el pueblo de Cogua, Cundinamarca, a donde se le hizo marchar a pie y conducida por un escolta.
Tanto el traje como su peinado con el cabello apenas recogido por un lazo rojo, muestran la influencia de la moda francesa correspondiente a la Ilustración y la Revolución

María de los Remedios llegó a la Nueva Granada a finales del siglo XVIII con su esposo, el ingeniero Eleuterio Zebollino, teniente coronel, y con su hermano Francisco de Paula Aguilar, quien se casaría posteriormente con Teresa Suárez en Santa Fe. Los primeros cronistas del teatro bogotano coinciden en las cualidades artísticas y en la belleza de La Zebollino

María de los Remedios llegó de Andalucía; abrazó la causa de la revolución al igual que su hermano Francisco de Paula, a quien Morillo hizo fusilar el 25 de octubre de 1816 en la plaza de San Victorino, y como su esposo don Eleuterio Cebollino, que fue condenado en el mismo año a prisión en las bóvedas de Puerto Cabello, durante el “Régimen del Terror” (1775-1837). “La Cebollino” sufrió una suerte menos adversa pero igual de sombría, en julio de 1816, se decretó su destierro y confinamiento en el pueblo de Cogua, Cundinamarca, a donde se le hizo marchar a pie y conducida por un escolta.

Domínguez del Castillo retrató a María de los Remedios Aguilar en una acuarela sobre marfil, posiblemente en la misma época en la que ella se presentó en el teatro. Sus rasgos coinciden con las descripciones de los cronistas José María Cordovez Moure (1835-1918), Pedro María Ibáñez (1854-1919) y Luis Augusto Cuervo (1893-1954). Según éstos, “la Cebollino” era una mujer alta y delgada, de tez muy clara y ojos azules. Su vestido elaborado en tela al parecer translúcida, con corte debajo del busto, cubierto con una vaporosa tela de color rojo, sujetada en el hombro por un broche a modo de túnica, que deja al descubierto los hombros y brazos, está complementado por un brazalete.

8. María Águeda del Sagrado Corazón Gallardo Guerrero de Villamizar


Pamplona, 7 de febrero de 1751 Fue una patriota y aristócrata criolla colombiana. Es considerada como la única mujer prócer de la Independencia de Colombia.

Doña Águeda a la edad de 60 años, en un acto simbólico en contra de la corona española, le arrebata el bastón de mando al Gobernador del Nuevo Reino de Granada, el catalán Juan Bastús Fallas , quien luego lo quiebra con sus manos en señal de claro descontento y rebeldía, bajo la mirada y aprobación generalizada de los pamploneses. Tras este hecho se suscita una serie de acontecimientos que culminaron con el denominado grito del 20 de julio. Fue Simón Bolívar quien calificó a Pamplona como «Ciudad Patriota», luego de la heroica gesta realizada por Águeda Gallardo, sin embargo, debido al riguroso sistema de sociedad de patriarcado imperante en aquella época, no figura en el Acta de Independencia redactada para la ocasión, por el solo hecho de ser mujer.

Dice el historiador Luis Eduardo Páez Courvel en su obra ‘Precursores, Mártires y Próceres santandereanos en la Independencia de Colombia’ que en la residencia de doña Águeda comenzaron a realizarse tertulias, cuyo tema central era La Independencia. También lo corrobora don Luis Febres Cordero en su libro: ‘Del Antiguo Cúcuta’. Los criollos residentes en nuestra ciudad comenzaron a leer y a discutir en esas reuniones ‘Los Derechos del Hombre y del Ciudadano’ y el ‘Contrato Social’ de Jean-Jacques Rousseau, documentos que había dejado intencionalmente el general Antonio Nariño en la residencia de un hermano de doña Águeda.

9. Ramona Alvarán

Hace parte de las mujeres que participaron políticamente en la independencia de Colombia, fue sostenedora, colaboradora e incluso miembro de guerrillas patrióticas. sirvió al ejército libertador acompañando a -patriotas o realistas- su mención como el de otras heroínas ha sido marginal con relación a la participación masculina.

10. Dolores Vargas París

Nació del 28 de octubre de 1878 en Santa fe, fue Primera dama de la Gran Colombia.

Hija del doctor Ignacio Vargas (a El Mocho) y doña Ignacia París, fue, como su madre, una de las mujeres de sorprendente belleza entre las de la capital; con el fusilamiento del doctor Vargas el día 19 de junio (1816), quedó huérfana de padre y madre y reducida a la miseria por la Junta de Secuestros, como toda su familia. Al abrigo de su abuela doña Genoveva Ricaurte de París enjugaba sus lágrimas cuando esta señora fue condenada con una hija y su nieta a destierro y confinamiento en la población de Facatativá, a donde se las hizo marchar escoltadas y a pie. Esta señorita fue de las que hicieron los honores del triunfo al Libertador con motivo de la victoria de Boyacá, coronándolo con laureles, y fue ella quien le dirigió el sentido discurso que en esa solemnidad hizo derramar lágrimas a todos los espectadores.

11. Juana Velasco de Gallo 


Nació en lo que hoy es Toca, Boyacá que entonces hacía parte de la Provincia de Tunja. La Villa de Tunja, en la época Colonial, extendía sus dominios hasta Sogamoso.

Juana velasco de Gallo, Dominga Burbano, Luisa Góngora, Andrea Velasco y Domitila Sarasti murieron fusiladas en la noche del 13 de diciembre de 1812, luego de que el ejército realista pastuso derrotara a las tropas republicanas, comandadas por Joaquín de Caicedo y el norteamericano Macaulay. Historias más recientes también hablan de la mujer nariñense en la vida regional.

Hoy, en la sede del club Boyacá puede observarse, en placa memorable, la proclama del Libertador en honor a las mujeres, exaltando la igualdad y valía de las mujeres colombianas. “La casa que hoy ocupa el Club Boyacá, estuvo en posesión de los descendientes de la prosapia Holguín en los siglos XVI y XVII. A finales del siglo XVII, fue adquirida por don Andrés Francisco Gallo y Alarcón y su señora Juana Velasco Baños y Ferro, quienes permanecieron hasta la tercera década del siglo XIX. Posteriormente pasó a manos de don Javier Tejada y su esposa doña Manuela Niño. Luego perteneció a don Antonio Barrera quien en 1872 se la vendió a don Benito Luque García, padre de doña María Luque quien estuvo desposada con don Hermófilo Rivadeneira”.

Además de la ropa, esta mujer le regaló a Simón Bolívar su caballo El Muchacho, con el que el Libertador resultó vencedor en la Batalla de Boyacá.

12. Manuela Cañizares

Se identificó en la lucha que los criollos tenían contra las autoridades que lideraban la Audiencia de Quito, las cuales se oponían a respetar los derechos ciudadanos de sus habitantes. Inicia una patriota Cañizares, en reiteradas ocasiones, llegó a prestar su casa para que los quiteños realizaran las reuniones que tenían prohibidas. Allí planificaron los primeros movimientos contra las autoridades españolas, y aún más en contra del presidente Manuel Huríes, quien gobernaba la Real Audiencia de Quito.

La noche del 9 de agosto de 1809, los patriotas quiteños, tuvieron un momento de debilidad, el cual pudo hacer fracasar el movimiento revolucionario. A este respecto, Manuela se paró con firmeza y gran carácter delante de ellos, con el objetivo de incitarlos a continuar con los planes. Dichas frases pasaron a convertirse en parte de la historia quiteña. «Cobardes! Hombres nacidos para la servidumbre… de qué tenéis miedo…? ¡No hay tiempo que perder!». Al pregonarles dichas palabras, y gracias a su gran determinación, pudieron llevar a cabo victoriosamente la Revolución del 10 de agosto de 1809. El 2 de agosto de 1810, los patriotas quiteños, fueron asesinados, y Manuela Cañizares, fue ferozmente perseguida por las autoridades reales. Por tal motivo, se vio obligada a huir y a mantenerse escondida por algún tiempo en la hacienda del Valle de los Chillos, mientras que en Quito, se iniciaba el proceso penal contra quienes se revelaron.

Para Manuela se pedía la pena de muerte, al mismo tiempo que fue víctima de diversas difamaciones, hasta llegando a ser calificada como prostituta. Cuando Cañizares, pudo regresar a la ciudad, pasó a refugiarse en casa de unos amigos muy cercanos, que vivían en el barrio llamado San Roque. Muere Manuela Cañizares Los últimos días de Manuela, transcurrieron haciendo encajes para vender, prestando dinero a intereses, y alquilando algunos de sus trajes que se utilizaban para ir a fiestas. No obstante, ésta tenía una finca en la cual criaba su propio ganado. Después de hacer su testamento, sufrió un accidente que la dejó convaleciente, y que finalmente acabó con su vida el 27 de agosto de 1814. El mismo día que cumpliría otro año más de vida.

Manuela, se destacó por ser una mujer con una valentía indiscutible. Su vida radicó en luchar por el patriotismo, por dedicarle amor al pueblo, llegando a ser una incansable luchadora.
