La fiesta del Chivo y la orgía salvaje del Matarife

Estoy leyendo La fiesta del Chivo, una de las novelas que me debía de Mario Vargas Llosa. Narra la historia del dictador Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, quien durante 31 años (de 1930 a 1961) gobernó República Dominicana bajo un régimen de terror y sangre. Ha sido inevitable pensar en los paralelos con nuestro propio tirano, pues todo gobierno totalitario utiliza métodos similares.

Trujillo se creía un elegido de Dios para salvar la patria de los enemigos que la acechaban. Traicionar a Trujillo era traicionar la patria, así como servir a Trujillo era servirle a ella, como si un país fuera un solo hombre y no todos los ciudadanos y sus diferencias. Por eso es tan odiosa la mención constante que hacen los Uribistas de “la patria” al hablar de Uribe, y la tendencia a utilizar todo tipo de simbología nacionalista para envolver su nombre.

Trujillo a su vez desplegó una inmensa red de seguridad ilegal en torno a su régimen, como Uribe. Todo tirano es paranoico de las conspiraciones en su contra porque sabe que su gobierno se sustenta en el miedo y la ilegalidad, quienes lo rodean y defienden lo hacen por interés personal o por terror, no necesariamente por convicción política. En ese sentido, ¿cómo mantener la criminalidad de un régimen sino es a través del crimen? Trujillo espiaba a sus aliados y a sus contradictores, tenía oídos y ojos por todos lados, e hizo de los órganos de seguridad estatal una prolongación armada de su tiranía. En eso mismo se convirtió el DAS en la era Uribe I y II, y en eso se está convirtiendo la Fiscalía en este gobierno.

Así como hablan de la Patria, hablan del Honor. El tirano se mueve por principios de “honorabilidad”.

Trujillo también gobernó tras bambalinas, moviendo los hilos de presidentes calanchines. Solía designar cargos a su antojo entre familiares, y elegía a dedo a quienes serían luego elegidos en las urnas, haciendo de la democracia una simple fachada. Todo el capítulo 14 de la novela recrea una reunión entre El Benefactor, como lo apodaban, y el Presidente Balaguer, figura meramente ornamental en el organigrama de gobierno, pues quien mandaba era El Jefe, no Balaguer. No es difícil imaginar a Uribe diciéndole a Duque las palabras que Vargas Llosa pone en boca de Trujillo, dirigidas a su súbdito-gobernante: “Lo envidio. Me hubiera gustado ser solo un estadista. Pero gobernar tiene una cara sucia, sin la cual lo que usted hace sería imposible”.

Así como hablan de la Patria, hablan del Honor. El tirano se mueve por principios de “honorabilidad”. ¿No es este el adjetivo predilecto del Matarife Uribe para referirse a los bandidos que han pasado por sus gobiernos? Asimismo, en la novela, Trujillo alude varias veces a la idea del honor para validar su persona y sus actos, o para invalidar el de los otros. ¿Por qué se habla de honor como si estuvieran en una Corte del siglo XVI? Las tiranías son una forma del poder monárquico donde la Ley y la Justicia es la palabra del tirano, como otrora fuera la del rey: él decide quién vive y quién muere, quién es traidor y quién no.

Un terror constante en quienes rodeaban a Trujillo era la posibilidad de ganarse la enemistad de El Jefe y ser condenados al ostracismo. ¿Cuántas personas no fueron condenadas o terminaron en cementerios o fosas comunes durante el Uribato, sólo porque el tirano dijo o insinuó que eran enemigos? Esto convierte la tiranía en un asunto kafkiano: existe sobre la gente una constante amenaza, un poder tan grande que está en todas partes y es superior a la ley y a la justicia, y al cual es imposible enfrentar.

El adoctrinamiento ideológico durante el régimen de Trujillo era constante. En los programas educativos se exigía el estudio obligatorio de los discursos del dictador para entender “su amor a la patria”, y de su vida para comprender por qué se trataba de un enviado supremo. ¿Recuerdan la polémica por la manera maquillada como se estaba enseñando la Seguridad Democrática en los libros escolares? La estrategia mediática del Gran Colombiano, el interés por contradecir realidades históricas y por reescribir la memoria a su antojo, apuntan a ese adoctrinamiento ideológico.

En 1937, Trujillo les ordenó a sus fuerzas militares exterminar a todos los haitianos indocumentados que se encontraran en territorio dominicano. La matanza pudo haber ascendido a los 25 mil muertos. En total se calculan unas 50 mil las personas asesinadas en su régimen. A Trujillo lo mataron a balazos en una carretera, presa de una conjura, una noche de mayo de 1961, mientras su chofer lo llevaba a su casa de descanso. ¿Es posible que todos los tiranos terminen, tarde o temprano, de una forma u otra, vencidos por sus muertos? A uno le gustaría pensar que sí, aunque no todos terminen como Fujimori o Milosevic; aunque algunos mueran de viejo en el exilio, como Pinochet, o en ejercicio de sus funciones, como Franco.

En un punto de la novela, una anciana dominicana que vivió toda la Era Trujillo, lanza resignada una afirmación que resume una de las consecuencias simbólicas de la imposición del terror como forma de gobierno: la aceptación del mal como parte esencial del ejercicio político. «Bueno, la política es eso», dice la mujer, «abrirse camino entre cadáveres».
