Crew Dragon, nombre de la nave, transportó a Bob Behnken y Doug Hurley a la Estación Espacial Internacional (EEI). Ellos tendrán la misión de hacer el último proceso de validación de la nave y probar todos los sistemas de maniobra.
Si la misión Demo-2 de Crew Dragon es exitosa, SpaceX seguirá adelante con las seis misiones operativas a la EEI, las cuales debe cumplir mediante un contrato de US$2.600 millones con la NASA.
De esta manera la NASA no tendrá que pagar a los rusos decenas de millones de dólares para enviar a sus astronautas en la nave Soyuz.
