Casi todo se ha escrito sobre la vida, muerte, obras y milagros de Pablo Escobar Gaviria. Mucho se ha dicho sobre su prontuario delictivo y algo se ha fantaseado acerca de sus hazañas. De su largo periplo como narcotraficante sabemos bastante, incluso por boca propia, y él mismo resumió su paso por la política con una máxima vigente hoy: “Te observan, te critican, te envidian y al final te imitan”.

Conocemos los inicios de Escobar lavando y jalando carros, sus primeros desmanes como ladrón de lápidas y su temeraria irrupción en la vida del hampa. Sabemos también de su afición por las armas, por las obras de arte, por las mujeres bellas, por el fútbol, por los animales exóticos. Vimos sorprendidos -cual instalación de arte Kitsch- su primer millón de dólares en las paredes del cuarto que construyó en la Catedral. Asistimos perplejos a su desquiciado ritual antropófago en un asado con la carne de sus enemigos; nos llegaron los gritos desgarradores de docenas de muchachas inocentes asesinadas en una noche de horror; intuimos su desprecio por la vida ajena y su desmedida ambición por el poder. Pero no obstante reconocer el amoroso apego a su familia (que a la postre allanaría su camino a la muerte y, obviando sus breves mensajes a sus amigos o amantes, “Virginia, no pienses que si no te llamo no te extraño mucho, no pienses que si no te veo no siento tu ausencia”), poco o nada sabíamos de su faceta de escritor.

En enero de 1988 un carro-bomba es accionado frente al edificio Mónaco en el barrio El Poblado, donde vivía su familia. El edificio fue registrado en la notaría 29 a nombre de Manuela Escobar Henao, quien para la fecha tenía tres años. Más tarde, por efectos de la implacable persecución de sus enemigos, gran parte de sus fincas y propiedades explotan o son incendiadas; entre ellas una lujosa casa en El Poblado, en cuyo interior fue hallada calcinada una gran cantidad de obras de arte, incluida una colección de carros antiguos, entre los cuales supuestamente estaba el vehículo en el que mataron a Bonnie & Clyde.  De una caja fuerte hallada entre los escombros, un investigador recogió un pequeño libro que llamó su atención: “Fábulas para Manuela”. Después de conservarlo un tiempo, intentó infructuosamente hacérselo llegar a la niña, quien ya se encontraba fuera del país. Entonces, se lo envía a una de sus maestras. Una tarde cualquiera, por azares del destino y bajo estricta confidencialidad, el libro pasa por mis manos unos instantes. En un impulso insensato decido pegarle una ojeada y tomarle una foto a su portada. No hay tiempo para más. El libro desaparece. Ahora, años después, encuentro ese registro en mi archivo de imágenes.

Cuando en 1993, un día después de cumplir 44 años, el padre de Manuela fue abatido a tiros por el Bloque de Búsqueda en el tejado de una casa en Medellín, Manuela tenía 9 años.

El periodista José Alejandro Castaño Hoyos quiso escribir un libro sobre la vida de los Escobar Henao y estuvo visitándolos en el exilio durante varios días.  Habían pasado 14 años desde la muerte del capo y ellos trataban de rehacer sus vidas. De todo lo vivido durante esas tres semanas con los Escobar Henao, lo que más le impactó a Castaño fue la huella de dolor de Manuela, la hija adorada del capo. No la vio, por sus actividades nunca coincidieron en el tiempo “pero su melancolía quedaba impregnada en el apartamento”.

Todos conocemos las imágenes recientes de su madre y su hermano Juan Pablo, pero la figura actual de Manuela es un misterio, nadie ha podido verla en años. Intrigado, el periodista se esforzó por reconstruir la historia de esa niña triste, hoy convertida en mujer. Para rehacerse, dejó de llamarse Manuela Escobar Henao. Ahora, con otros nombres y apellidos sigue tratando de encontrarle sentido a su vida. En su afán por armar el rompecabezas de la muchacha, Castaño entrevistó a muchas personas, incluida una mujer que decía haber quedado en embarazo de Pablo Escobar y este la obligó a abortar porque supuestamente le había prometido a su hija que ella sería la última descendiente, “el final del cuento”. Dice Castaño Hoyos que uno de sus guardaespaldas recordaba el episodio del unicornio que en una navidad pidió la niña y ellos tuvieron que aparecerse, por solicitud del patrón, con un caballo blanco al que le pegaron con grapas un cuerno bajo la crin y adhirieron largas alas de papel a su torso. El animal murió como consecuencia de una infección. Si Manuela quería una jirafa, había que mandarle traer una de la lejana África. Si la princesa quería ver en persona a los personajes del programa de moda, sus deseos eran cumplidos. Nadie se resistía a una de sus invitaciones, quizá debido a lo ambiguo de su aforismo: “Quien hoy me ignora por orgullo, mañana me recordará por ausencia”.

En “Cierra tus ojos, princesa” de Ícono Editorial, Castaño Hoyos cuenta que “Escobar era un hombre afectuoso, juguetón y creativo con la niña. Un hacedor de fantasías creadas para sorprender los días de su hija. Cuando la llevaba a los escondites del cartel, empujaba puertas secretas diciendo: —ábrete sésamo— y como por arte de magia, bóvedas repletas de dinero se abrían.  — ¿Cuánto son mil millones de dinero papá?, —Lo que valen tus ojos, princesa —, le respondía”.

Pero el libro “Fábulas para Manuela”, que conocí fugazmente, dedicado a ella y seguramente escrito por su padre, tal vez jamás llegó a sus manos. Es un pequeño ejemplar de no más de cien páginas publicado en edición única en 1989, para ser leído por su hija cuando él no estuviera y pudiera recordar las historias que él le inventaba en sus furtivos y breves encuentros. “El libro más humano sobre la vida”, dice a modo de subtítulo. “Es una historia de papel, para que Manuela sea feliz”, escribe como prefacio.

“En pocos días estarás cumpliendo tres años, estás enferma y no he podido ir al hospital. Por mi clandestinidad hace seis horas no te veo y ya me estás haciendo falta”, escribe.

El libro está compuesto por 28 pequeños cuentos, bajo el seudónimo de Édgar Escobar. Podríamos especular un poco al respecto: tal vez el nombre de su cuentista predilecto o el de un familiar cercano que como testaferro intermedió entre la niña y sus afectos. En su portada está dibujado un caballo blanco sobre un arcoíris sin colores, una casa en una nube, evocando quizá a Escalona, una luna y un sol que ríen. Está escrito en un lenguaje simple y sencillo con esporádicos asomos de poesía y grandes expresiones de ternura, con los que no solo trata de entretener a la niña, sino de inculcarle algunos principios de vida elementales que le sirvan de rutero en el áspero sendero que está consciente le espera. De sus cuentos recuerdo títulos como “Sol apagado”, “Condenar el otoño”, “La amistad es una lejanía”. Al final, a manera de posfacio, hace una recopilación de todas las esquelas que le ha mandado con motivo de su cumpleaños o con cualquier pretexto afectivo, para que su madre le lea, pero que seguramente dada su corta edad ella no pudo entender y ahora no recuerda. En ellas le expresa su infinito amor y  le  demuestra que pese a la implacable persecución a la que está sometido, pese a las sirenas en la distancia, a los ladridos de los perros en el monte, a las pisadas nocturnas sobre las hojas secas, al vuelo amedrentador de los helicópteros, al silbido de las lechuzas en la penumbra, pese a la encrucijada aparentemente insalvable en que se ha metido como consecuencia de sus actos, nunca la ha sacado de su pensamiento y de su corazón. En ese momento es el hombre más rico del mundo, pero el más perseguido. Es el enemigo público número uno del país, el más temido, el más vapuleado, el más odiado y, debido a la separación de ella, también el más desgraciado. Se siente dueño de medio país y un hombre autónomo de sus actos en soledad, pero al final es tan solo un pobre hombre que no puede abrazar a su hija.
