Por primera vez en sus 175 años de historia, la prestigiosa revista Scientific American decidió apoyar a un candidato en el peculiar sistema bipartidista de EE. UU. (tan peculiar que en 2000 y 2016 ganó el que sacó menos votos). El hecho es tan insólito que ha repercutido mucho más allá de sus siete millones de lectores. Puede analizarse en el marco de la coyuntura electoral, pero su carácter extraordinario invita a una lectura más profunda del acontecimiento.
Scientific American, cuya edición en español se titula Investigación y Ciencia, no es cualquier revista. Se trata de la publicación científica para público amplio más importante del mundo. Es la cumbre del periodismo científico y en ella han escrito los científicos más brillantes de los últimos dos siglos. Actualmente pertenece a Springer Nature.
El pronunciamiento aparece en el editorial de octubre de 2020 divulgado esta semana y está firmado por los editores en pleno. En él se evalúa a Trump y su gestión en relación con la pandemia, el sistema de salud, el cambio climático y la transición energética. Asimismo se evalúa el programa de Joe Biden, del Partido Demócrata, en los mismos ítems.
Arranca diciendo que “la evidencia y la ciencia muestran que Donald Trump ha perjudicado gravemente a Estados Unidos y a su pueblo, debido a su rechazo de la evidencia y la ciencia. El ejemplo más desvastador es su respuesta inepta y deshonesta a la pandemia de Covid-19 que, para mediados de septiembre, ha costado la vida a más de 190.000 estadounidenses. También ha atacado a las protecciones ambientales, al sistema de salud, a los investigadores y agencias públicas de ciencia que ayudan a este país a prepararse para sus mayores desafíos”.
El editorial abunda en ejemplos del manejo “catastrófico” de la pandemia por parte de Trump, incluyendo sus mentiras. Frente a algo tan sencillo y básico como la utilización de mascarillas, el presidente activamente estimuló su no uso. Su actitud de subestimar la pandemia en vez de controlarla y de ignorar el consejo de los expertos conllevó al rebrote con graves consecuencias económicas y sociales, como el desempleo.
Trump mintió al público sobre la letalidad del virus, propiciando riesgosos comportamientos de la ciudadanía y dividiendo al pueblo entre los que toman en serio la amenaza y aquellos que creen las falsedades del mandatario. Más allá del virus, Trump ha tratado de eliminar la Ley de Asistencia Asequible y Protección al Paciente sin ofrecer alternativas, ha propuesto recortes multimillonarios a los institutos nacionales de salud, la Fundación Nacional para la Ciencia y los centros de control y prevención de enfermedades. Así como ataca al sistema de salud ha presionado para eliminar las regulaciones de salud de la Agencia de Protección Ambiental para mayor riesgo de la gente y ha reemplazado a científicos con representantes de la industria en las juntas asesoras de la agencia. Con su negacionismo del cambio climático, Trump ha obstaculizado todo lo que apunte a su mitigación.
En contraste con las duras criticas al aspirante a repetir período, el editorial analiza positivamente el programa de Biden. Dice que el candidato demócrata, que derrotó a Bernie Sanders en las primarias, “viene preparado planes para controlar el Covid-19, mejorar el sistema público de salud, reducir las emisiones de carbono y restaurar el rol de la auténtica ciencia en la gestación de políticas públicas”. Las propuestas de Biden se fundamentan en el conocimiento de expertos, como David Kessler, quien fue director de la FDA, Rebecca Katz, especialista en inmunología de la Universidad de Georgetown University y Ezekiel Emanuel, bioeticista de la Universidad de Pennsylvania. No incluye a médicos que creen en extraterrestres o en falsas terapias desenmascaradas por la ciencia y que Trump tanto elogia.
Los editorialistas de la revista destacan diversos aspectos de las propuestas de Biden en salud, política social y medio ambiente. En este último tema vale la pena detenerse, pues tiene implicaciones para el resto del planeta. Biden, dice la revista, planea planea invertir dos billones de dólares en el sector energético libre de emisiones, construir estructuras y vehículos con uso eficiente de energía, impulsar la energía solar y eólica, establecer agencias de investigación para desarrollar la energía nuclear segura y tecnologías de captura de carbono, entre otras acciones. La inversión generará dos millones de empleos y el plan se financiará –en parte- eliminando los recortes de impuestos con que la administración Trump benefició a las corporaciones. El 40% de estos desarrollos de infraestructura y energía beneficiarán a comunidades históricamente desfavorecidas. El editorial reconoce que la implementación de algunos de estos programas del candidato demócrata dependerán de sortear el camino legislativo.
Finalmente Scientific American advierte que “Trump y sus aliados” (nótese que se cuida de no mencionar al Partido Republicano como tal) han tratado de crear obstáculos para la votación de noviembre, por lo que invita a los ciudadanos a superar esas trabas y votar. Y remata: “Es tiempo de sacar a Trump y elegir a Biden, quien tiene una trayectoria de respeto a los datos y a la ciencia”.
Este texto muestra a una sociedad polarizada entre la ciencia y la anticiencia, un fenómeno que de manera menos aguda se manifiesta también en Europa y América Latina. Lo vemos en Bolsonaro en Brasil y en el anterior gobierno del PP en España. Pero también en otros partidos y gobiernos, incluso en algunos de izquierda. Derechas como la trumpista, la uribista o la de Bolsonaro se nutren de oscurantismos religiosos, conspiranoicos y pseudocientíficos. Pero otros oscurantismos han infiltrado a las izquierdas a partir del posmodernismo, por ejemplo, el construccionismo social y el decolonialismo antioccidental. Y nunca faltan los que se creen de izquierda pero tragan entero las “teorías conspirativas”, las supersticiones “ancestrales” y las pseudociencias que posan de alternativas al gran capital.
Coletilla: la lección para nosotros es que la educación para la democracia y la educación científica de calidad son una sola. Con esa premisa debemos repensar una reforma educativa en Colombia.
