SUMARIO: En una sociedad tan cerrada y clasista como la del vallecaucana, hasta un tipo como José Hilario López, en cuya presidencia se firmó el decreto de la abolición de esclavitud, tuvo más de un problema para ser aceptado por las elites de la región.
La opinión cumple una función social que va más allá de comunicar, de expresar una idea o mostrar una situación que, necesariamente, atraviesa los límites del lenguaje: sentar una posición frente a un hecho. Y toda posición, lo admitimos o no, es ideológica. Las ideologías son, pues, esas marcas referenciales que determinan no solo el actuar de una sociedad, sino que encauzan también sus creencias y costumbres, filtran el lenguaje y se ponen de manifiesto en la escritura. Por lo tanto, toda escritura es ideológica. Es decir, deja ver la posición de quien comunica y la manera como mira el mundo a partir de eso de Bourdieu llamó habitus.
Desde la visión del teórico francés, las experiencias son la base que nos permite la construcción de mundos. La señora Harriet Beecher Stowe publicó en 1852, en el Nacional Era de Washington D.C., una novela por entregas que tituló La cabaña del tío Tom, una historia sobre un “esclavizado domesticado” cuya narración se divide en dos: entre los negros que cumplían funciones en las casas y los que hacían su trabajo en el campo. Esta aparente diferencia determinó una posición crucial: los que asimilaron las normas impuestas por sus dueños y los que soñaban con la libertad, con volver al terruño de donde fueron sacados contra su voluntad.
A los primeros se les vestía con trajes “elegantes”, similares a los de sus dueños, se le enseñó etiqueta y otros protocolos; a los segundos, el trabajo bajo el sol les curtió la piel y les dejó por siempre en sus cuerpos las cicatrices de los latigazos del capataz. Este hecho determinó el comportamiento de unos y otros. Los primeros se aburguesaron. Esa cercanía con el poder (es decir, con sus amos) les dio una mirada distinta del panorama general de ese extenso periodo que fue la esclavitud. No lucharon contra la opresión que les impedía salir solos a la calle ni contra las violaciones reiteradas de las negras por parte de sus dueños; fueron doblegados como se doblega el comportamiento de un perro. Entre estos estaba el Tío Tom, quien ante situaciones como las señalada anteriormente terminaba dándole siempre la razón al amo.
En la celebrada cinta de Quentin Tarantino, Django sin cadenas (2012), se alcanza a ver con mucha claridad este drama: Django, un negro liberado por un alemán (dentista y cazarrecompensas que no cree en la superioridad racial), se enfrenta a la tarea de rescatar a su mujer, propiedad del esclavista y hacendado Calvin J. Candie, quien tiene como conserje y mano derecha a Stephen, un negro esclavizado que se ha constituido en un maestro del terror cuando se trata de infligirles dolor a los otros negros.
Stephen es la definición de lo que en Cartagena de Indias se llama caballo cochero; es decir, la mirada del animal permanece fija en el camino, dirigida por quien ostenta el látigo. En palabras concretas, hace referencia a la sumisión ante quien tiene el poder. De ahí que Stephen sienta animadversión por Django, pues no le cabe en la cabeza que un negro como él pueda montar a caballo libremente y hacer lo que le venga en ganas. Lo que diferencia entonces a Tom de Stephen es, en realidad, el grado de domesticación, de asimilación de las normas impuestas. Si es cierto que el primero mete la mano en la candela por el amo, no llega al extremo de hacerle daño físico a los suyos ni experimentar placer ante su sufrimiento. La domesticación de Stephen, por el contrario, alcanza el grado de psicopatía, pues experimenta una sensación placentera cuando un negro es sometido al castigo físico y la punta del látigo se hunde en la piel y la sangre brota de sus heridas. Este hecho hace una pequeña diferencia, pero no lo suficiente para pensar en dos formas distintas de mirar el mundo que les rodea.
Quizá a esto hacía referencia Francia Márquez cuando respondió el trino de Asprilla en el que afirmó que “apoyar a Álvaro Uribe Vélez es un acto de responsabilidad social”. En este sentido, la respuesta de Márquez (“esclavo doméstico”) está más cercana a una lógica que inserta toda ideología: la experiencia de los individuos (que Bourdieu llamó habitus) y su posición en la sociedad. Es decir, la mirada que se proyecta sobre el mundo está determinada por el lugar que ocupamos en este. La manera de interpretar los hechos es determinada, así mismo, por un conocimiento previo. Nadie da lo que no tiene. En el caso del exfutbolista es relevante porque es una figura pública cuyos estudios académicos no superan la secundaria y su pasado está marcado por la pobreza. Pero esto, en realidad, no determina del todo la posición de un individuo. Aunque Asprilla tenga hoy finca, tierras, ganado y caballos de paso fino no es un ciudadano estrato cinco, aunque defienda los intereses del seis.
